Brothers Grimm-Inspired Landscape

“Brothers Grimm‘s Wanderings“ is a new breathtaking photo series by German photographer Kilian Schönberger inspired by the gloomy tales of these legendary storytellers. After the success of his “Brothers Grimm’s Homeland” series, which he created a year ago, the photographer has continued traveling throughout Central Europe to capture landscapes that look like scenes from old spooky tales.

I think there is a deep longing for tranquil naturalness among people in our technology-driven environment,” writes Schönberger. “Therefore I don’t want to show just portrayals of natural scenes – I want to create visually accessible places where the visitor can virtually put his mind at rest and make up his own stories. Possibly this is the real benefit of my work: Resting places for the eyes in a visually overstimulated world.

The Brothers Grimm & Disney – Into the woods, Cinderella

Grimm

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm(1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors who together collected and published folklore. They are among the most well-known storytellers of folk tales, popularizing stories such as “Cinderella” (Aschenputtel), “The Frog Prince” (Der Froschkönig), “Hansel and Gretel” (Hänsel und Gretel), “Rapunzel”, “Rumpelstiltskin” (Rumpelstilzchen), and “Snow White” (Schneewittchen). Their first collection of folk tales, Children’s and Household Tales (Kinder- und Hausmärchen), was published in 1812.

The popularity of the Grimms’ collected folk tales endured well beyond their lifetimes. The tales are available in more than 100 translations and have been adapted by filmmakers including Lotte Reiniger, and Walt Disney, with films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty. In the mid-20th century the tales were used as propaganda by the Third Reich; later in the 20th century psychologists such as Bruno Bettelheim reaffirmed the value of the work, in spite of the cruelty and violence in the original versions of some of the tales that were sanitized.

I have always been fascinated by their stories and how these tales were found and imagined by themselves with very dark elements. Being turned from quite dark sinister stories to fairytale princess stories with Disney you can still feel and sense the dark nature originated from them and it separates the Disney made and Disney/Brothers Grimm inspired films.

The Brothers Grimm film was very enchanting with the dark twists to it which were quite shocking! This is how their stories were original so I would love to see them all brought to life in their original versions..or close too..

Disney seems to be looking into this..

SNOW WHITE

Snow White” is a German fairy tale known across much of Europe, and is today one of the most famous fairy tales worldwide. The Brothers Grimm published it in 1812 in the first edition of their collection Grimms’ Fairy Tales. It was titled in GermanSneewittchen (in modern orthography Schneewittchen), and numbered as Tale 53. The Grimms completed their final revision of the story in 1854.

The fairy tale features such elements as the magic mirror, the poisoned apple, the glass coffin, and the seven dwarfs, who were first given individual names in the Broadway play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1912) and then given different names in Walt Disney‘s 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Grimm story, which is commonly referred to as “Snow White”, should not be confused with the story of “Snow White and Rose Red” (in German “Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot“), another fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm.

If you read the original version by the Grimm Brothers you will notice the iconic symbols still used in the newer versions today but will feel the dark almost sinister twists in the story. They are all very interesting to read!
