Emily Blunt – Violet Grey Magazine

“Be careful what you wish for.. What happens after happily ever after?”

Emily Blunt, who plays The Baker’s Wife in the upcoming film Into the Woods, stars as her own favorite fairy tale characters in a new shoot for Violet Grey magazine.

SHE IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING IN THIS GORGEOUS SHOOT!

She is fast becoming one of my favorite actresses… can you believe how far she’s come since Devil Wears Prada 😀

The 31-year-old English actress channels Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella – also the film’s three main heroines – for the fashion spread, which was shot at New York’s famed Carlyle Hotel.

‘The message [of the film, Into the Woods] is very much be careful of what you wish for, and it also begs the question, what happens after happily ever after? I just wanted to play with those ideas a bit more,’ explained the actress, who directed the shoot herself.

‘It was hugely appealing to me to have that much input,’ she said.

‘Usually, as an actress, you show up and they say this is what the look is and this is the character that we want you to be. And that’s always fun but the fact that I got to have a say in the story was really exciting.’t

Using Into the Woods as her inspiration, Ms Blunt said she wanted to avoid portraying ‘one-dimensional fairy tale characters’.

‘They are modern women who are powerful and complicated,’ she said.

Based on Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award–winning Broadway musical of the same name, Into the Woods follows a witch (played by Meryl Streep) who conspires to teach important lessons to various characters of popular children’s stories including Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella (played by Anna Kendrick), Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel.

When The Baker and his Wife (Ms Blunt) learn they have been cursed by the Witch, they embark into the woods break the spell and begin a family.

Ms Blunt welcomed her first child, daughter Hazel, with husband John Krasinski in February, almost four years after they tied the knot in July 2010 in Italy.

The star said that she plans to read Cinderella to Hazel, despite the ‘grizzly’ bits.

‘The Brothers Grimm version has some grisly moments, like the part where the stepsister cuts off her heel to fit in the glass slipper. But maybe if I read it in a happy voice, she’ll just be like, “Everything’s fine!”‘

What a stunning shoot! It reminds me of one of my first photo-shoots I created while studying photography at school.. I had a theme which was about glamour and a fairytale heroin in unfamiliar places.. like a big ball gown dressed princess in a public toilet, using a metro bus and walking in a dark alleyway.

Can’t wait for this film! Not long to go!

The Brothers Grimm & Disney – Into the woods, Cinderella

Grimm

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm(1786–1859), were German academics, linguists, cultural researchers, lexicographers and authors who together collected and published folklore. They are among the most well-known storytellers of folk tales, popularizing stories such as “Cinderella” (Aschenputtel), “The Frog Prince” (Der Froschkönig), “Hansel and Gretel” (Hänsel und Gretel), “Rapunzel”, “Rumpelstiltskin” (Rumpelstilzchen), and “Snow White” (Schneewittchen). Their first collection of folk tales, Children’s and Household Tales (Kinder- und Hausmärchen), was published in 1812.

The popularity of the Grimms’ collected folk tales endured well beyond their lifetimes. The tales are available in more than 100 translations and have been adapted by filmmakers including Lotte Reiniger, and Walt Disney, with films such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Sleeping Beauty. In the mid-20th century the tales were used as propaganda by the Third Reich; later in the 20th century psychologists such as Bruno Bettelheim reaffirmed the value of the work, in spite of the cruelty and violence in the original versions of some of the tales that were sanitized.

I have always been fascinated by their stories and how these tales were found and imagined by themselves with very dark elements. Being turned from quite dark sinister stories to fairytale princess stories with Disney you can still feel and sense the dark nature originated from them and it separates the Disney made and Disney/Brothers Grimm inspired films.

brothersgrimm_14

The Brothers Grimm film was very enchanting with the dark twists to it which were quite shocking! This is how their stories were original so I would love to see them all brought to life in their original versions..or close too..

Disney seems to be looking into this..

SNOW WHITE

780px-Franz_Jüttner_Schneewittchen_2

Snow White” is a German fairy tale known across much of Europe, and is today one of the most famous fairy tales worldwide. The Brothers Grimm published it in 1812 in the first edition of their collection Grimms’ Fairy Tales. It was titled in GermanSneewittchen (in modern orthography Schneewittchen), and numbered as Tale 53. The Grimms completed their final revision of the story in 1854.

771px-Franz_Jüttner_Schneewittchen_5

The fairy tale features such elements as the magic mirror, the poisoned apple, the glass coffin, and the seven dwarfs, who were first given individual names in the Broadway play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1912) and then given different names in Walt Disney‘s 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Grimm story, which is commonly referred to as “Snow White”, should not be confused with the story of “Snow White and Rose Red” (in German “Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot“), another fairy tale collected by the Brothers Grimm.

If you read the original version by the Grimm Brothers you will notice the iconic symbols still used in the newer versions today but will feel the dark almost sinister twists in the story. They are all very interesting to read!

INTO THE WOODS

CINDERELLA

Cinderella-Vogue-24Sept13-pr_b_1080x720

Disney releases the first picture from its new film version of Cinderella, starring Lily James (Downton Abbey) in the title role. Directed by Kenneth Branagh, the movie will hit cinemas in March 2015.

So excited to see Helena Bonham Carter as The Fairy Godmother and Richard Madden (GOT) as the Prince!

Two very exciting films to look out for! Will bring more information as they unfold! I hope the Brothers Grimm/Disney film will live up to the Grimm Brothers expectations! Bring back the dark scary Disney tales!

Next on my to watch list is the Grimm Tales TV series!
