Disney Announces 9 New Films

Following the runaway success of Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book, Disney have announced that they have no less than nine more live action films in development.

This isn’t counting – by the way – anything that they’ve already filmed. If you include the yet-to-be-released Alice Through the Looking GlassBeauty and the Beast and Pete’s Dragon, then that’s 12 live action Disney films coming our way.

10

While we don’t know when the following titles will hit our screens, Disney have allocated seven release slots – from July 2017 right through to November 2019 – for live action movies, and so we can expect that most of these films will drop then.

Check them out, and see what you think:

1. Cruella

Emma Stone looks set to star as Cruella De Vil in this live action look at her evil exploits. Kelly Marcel, who wrote the screenplay for Saving Mr. Banks as well, interestingly enough, as 50 Shades of Grey, is rumoured to be on board as the writer, alongside The Devil Wears Prada and 27 Dresses scribe Aline Brosh McKenna.

2. Dumbo

Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book has been a huge hit, and so Disney are following it up with a live action remake of another beloved animal classic: Dumbo. Hopefully, this 21st century version will leave out the “Jim Crow” racism, but keep the incredibly touching, slightly heartbreaking love between Dumbo and his mum.

3. Maleficent 2

Angelina Jolie has signed on to reprise her role as Maleficent for a sequel expected to be released in 2017. While plot details are – for now – being kept tightly under wraps, we do know that Linda Woolverton – who wrote the first Maleficent as well as the live action Beauty and the Beast – is set to pen the screenplay.

4. A Wrinkle in Time

A teenage girl journeys through time and space in search of her missing father in one of Disney’s lesser known films. The live action remake, however, is set to be directed by Ava DuVernay – nominated for a Golden Globe for directing Selma – and we can’t wait to see what she comes up with..

5. Jungle Cruise

All we know about Jungle Cruise is its name, and the fact that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to star. Other than that, it’s anyone’s guess. Some sort of Jungle Book spin-off? A Race to Witch Mountain type family adventure? We’ll have to wait and see.

6. Mary Poppins Sequel

Emily Blunt is going to have a crack at filling Julie Andrews’ shoes, playing Mary Poppins in an as yet untitled sequel. Relative newcomer Lin-Manuel Miranda is rumoured to be playing Jack, and Finding NeverlandLife of Pi writer David Magee will be penning the screenplay.

7

7. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms

It looks like Disney is going to have a crack at a Christmas film, as they’ve set Dear John director Lasse Hallström the task of making The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. This Christmas Eve tale sees a young girl given a nutcracker for Christmas, and told by her parents to take extra special care of it. Surprise, surprise it comes to life, but then so does an evil, seven-headed mouse. So, swings and roundabouts really…

8. The Jungle Book 2

Disney had a go at making an animated Jungle Book 2 back in 2003, but it didn’t go down that well. Hopefully, Jon Favreau’s sequel will go down better. In the animated version, Mowgli heads back to the jungle after not adapting well to village life, and we can imagine that live action Jungle Book 2 will follow the same basic storyline.

8

9. Tink

Reese Witherspoon is set to star in and produce Tink: a live action film based on Peter Pan’s Tinkerbell. While we know that it’ll take place “in the world of the classic novel” (so presumably Neverland), and that Tinkerbell will be the main character, plot details are (as yet) thin on the ground… Watch this space.

Jason Bourne Is Back

Hold on to your hats! Matt Damon is back for the forth installment of the Jason Bourne franchise (well, fifth if you count the Damon-less Bourne Legacy) and if this first full trailer released by Universal Pictures is any indication it is going to be a doozy!

Damon in joined by Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Danish Girl), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan), and Tommy Lee Jones (The Fugitive, Men in Black). Julia Stiles reprises her role as Nicky Parsons in the series.

Other than there’s going to be a ton of amazing action sequences, the trailer doesn’t give away much about the movie.

All we know really know about Jason Bourne what Damon previously said:

“Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”

Snowden is mentioned early in the trailer, part of a reference to a new hack that has taken place that’s worse than what the NSA whistleblower accomplished recently.

The trailer may provide more questions than answers, but it also has Bourne fans eagerly anticipating July 29th when the film hits theaters.

Beyonce – Lemonade

Beyoncé‘s “Lemonade” album movie made its big worldwide premiere on HBO Saturday night (Apr 23).

The album movie is a compilation of music videos featuring songs from Beyoncé’s sixth studio album Lemonade, which was released exclusively on TIDAL immediately after the HBO premiere.

Trailer

Intertwined with spoken word poetry, the hour-long movie/album tells the story of a woman who is not to be messed with. The project also celebrates black women and black culture, and appears to reveal deeply personal stories regarding life, love, infidelity and realization.

Is she talking about her own husband Jay Z? Or is she talking about her father, Mathew Knowles, who famously cheated on her mother and had two children with two other women? OR IS SHE TALKING ABOUT BOTH? Those are the questions that burned up social media as the movie aired.

In addition to the personal revelations, the movie also features home movies showing Mathew Knowles playing with Blue Ivy, as well as footage from Beyoncé and Jay Z’s wedding, her pregnancy and Blue’s 1st birthday party.

Beyoncé’s Lemonade album movie also made a statement by featuring appearances of heartbroken mothers holding up photos of their sons who were murdered — Trayvon Martin’s mother Sybrina Fulton, Eric Garner’s mother Gwen Carr and Michael Brown’s mother Lezley McSpadden.

Lemonade also features celebrity cameos from Serena Williams, Zendaya and Quvenzhané Wallis.

Independence Day: Resurgence Trailer

Fox released a new full-length trailer for Independence Day: Resurgence last Friday to celebrate the Earth Day holiday and tease this summer’s blockbuster sequel.

The new trailer provides more details on the plot, which focuses on how the human race rebuilt after the events of the first film, only to come face to face with their alien rivals 20 years later. But despite that weighty description, there are some jokes too. Says Jeff Goldblum, who returns to play David Levinson, the reluctant hero of Independence Day: “They like to get the landmarks.” Indeed.

Check out the new trailer below. Independence Day: Resurgence is out June 24.

The Jungle Book Review

junglebooktriptychgallery

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

• About

A real life Jungle Book.. The man-cub Mowgli flees the jungle after a threat from the tiger Shere Khan. Guided by Bagheera the panther and the bear Baloo, Mowgli embarks on a journey of self-discovery, though he also meets creatures who don’t have his best interests at heart.

• Pass/Fail

Pass: The most beautiful visual film since Avatar. The CGI characters come to life and you get lost in this wonderful film. The storyline is solid and stays true to the book. I loved the way the original songs were tweaked for this film apart from King Louie’s. I also loved the ending to this film 🙂

Fail: There isn’t much of a fail in this.. the “I wanna be like you” song didn’t quite fit.

• Standout Performance

Neel Sethi as Mowgli. How did he work with all those CGI characters.. its amazing!

• Who Will Like This?

Disney fans, classic book lovers and Avatar fans.

• See It Now or Wait?

See it now.. in Imax if you can!

• Highlight

All the CGI animals, scenery and the twist on the ending 🙂

• Overall Impression

A slightly darker Jungle Book (which is good) with the iconic songs such as “The Bare Necessities”, “I Wanna Be Like You,” which of course are expected and don’t disappoint. Old as it may, the story of The Jungle Book remains an affecting contemplation on the virtues of family, self-growth, and man’s progress at the expense of nature. The Jungle Book successfully opens a new chapter in cinema’s visual storytelling prowess. It deserves to be seen and experienced in 3D or better, an IMAX theater. It is immersive, it is enchanting, and it is wonderful.
